Personal Philosophy:
"Three things in human life are important: The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind." - Henry James. There is energy flowing all around us. It is the thing that keeps us moving, growing, and living. It flows through our food, our cars, our lights, and our bodies. It is a natural part of our life and we don’t ever stop to think of what's responisble for all that energy. Now I’m not talking about physical energy that's generated through solar panels and windmills, I am talking about the spiritual energy that encompasses all of humanity. That kind of energy is very special in the way that it is created through our actions and our intentions. That's right, we have the power to manipulate energy for either good or evil. This is why kindness is vital in the development of the decency of the human race. Generosity, benevolence, and compassion are all responsible for creating all the joy, the hope, and the love we see in the world today. And you want to know what they have in common? They are all synonymous with the word kindness. An eight letter word, but with an big meaning behind it. Being kind is the most basic and most powerful thing you can do for somebody. Whether it is smiling at someone while passing by or giving someone the clothes off your back, kindness forges bonds between opposites and can be the difference between life and death.
Growing up, my mom had always taught me to be nice to others but she never said why. In the beginning, I thought of it as “ Do to others as you would have them do to you." I believed it was a secret defense mechanism and that if I mastered it, nothing bad would ever happen to me. My strategy was that if i gave a compliment here and there, I would be able to surpass evil and live another day. However, I was horribly mistaken. Over the years, many of my family members started to die out and I kept thinking to myself, "I did what I was supposed to, so why is this happening to me?" It took me a while to figure this out, but I finally realized that these things were not in my control and that my supposed 'truths' about kindness were wrong. These selfish ideas about being nice obviously did not cause the death of my loved ones, but their death did help me see that there was a deeper meaning behind being nice. I started to wonder why being nice was so important. If you weren't going to get anything good from it, why bother? I admit, I did do a few experiments with being nice just to see the point of it, but I soon fell in love. I don't know why but treating other people like human beings and making sure they feel as amazing as they are has a certain appeal to it. I know I'm no saint, but I do love being nice to people. It's one of the reasons why I get up in the morning; to brighten someone else's day. It's also amazing to see the effect of an act of kindness. It creates positive energy that ripples through the surrounding area and inspires others to want to do the same.
Although kindness can be many different things, the basic idea is to be kind because you want to, not because you have to or because you want something to gain. When you are kind, there is a domino effect and depending on your intentions, positive and negative energy will spread and influence others. This is why people should be kind for selfless reasons. Whether it is to help someone in math to see them better their education, or to aid homeless hurricane victims to ease their suffereing, kindness should be the desire send out positive vibes and help others to grow so that in time they may do the same. Just like what Mother Teresa says. "Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."
